Custom Software
Having custom software written for you is
like having a house built. You cannot see the
product until it is done. In both cases, the
quality of the finished product depends
mostly on the developer chosen. Choose
carefully.
Advantages:
- the computer does exactly what you want
it to do, you spend less time on the
computer and more time on your business
- because the software contains only what
you need, it should be easier to operate
- if required, changes to the system are
possible
- you can start with a basic system, then add
functions and reports as required
- a superior system can give you an
advantage over your competition
Disadvantages:
- you cannot see the product until it is done
- developer may go out of business and
leave you without support
- no trained personnel will exist
Tips:
- evaluate potential developers carefully,
talk to current and past clients, get written
references
- examine other software that the developer
has created, look for ease of use
- you know your business and your needs -
does the developer listen and understand?
- can you understand the developer or do
they use a lot of technical jargon?
- get a written proposal that indicates maximum dollars
and time
- start with a small application and once that
is completed satisfactorily, proceed with
larger projects
- before you see results, pay little or nothing
- you may be able to add the needed
functionality to your existing system
- it may be possible to find packaged
software that meets most of your needs
and then develop a separate system to
meet the rest
